portraits and figures
I spent the winter of '07 doing self portraits, for lack of other available models. Because I had only myself to satisfy, I was able to experiment with different pastel applications and with other painting media. In the end, my work took on a looser, more expressionistic look.

This Native man spends winter afternoons selling baleen in Anchorage. He let me take photos and this pastel portrait was the result. Baleen is taken from the mouth of the Bowhead whales that the Eskimos hunt.

On a cold spring day I sat outside on the mudflats by my cabin and painted this pastel, one of my favorites.

"Georgia's Ghost" was inspired by a trip to Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. Georgia O'Keefe painted there and in Abique from 1934 to about the early 1980's. Her presence pervades the entire countryside. The view is looking from Ghost House on the ranch.
